Digital Engineering Training
Build the knowledge and practical skills to apply digital engineering with Shoal’s training courses. Designed for Defence personnel and defence industry, our courses span systems engineering foundations, model-based systems engineering (MBSE), SysML and digital mission engineering. Aligned with the Australian Defence Digital Engineering Strategy, Shoal’s training courses help participants understand how Defence uses digital engineering to support system design and capability decisions.
“I liked the Defence context and use of [the] Digital Engineering Defence Strategy”.
MBSE Fundamentals
About the course
Develop your understanding of model-based systems engineering (MBSE) through theory and practical exercises. Learn to use a SysML-based modelling tool to represent system requirements, structure and behaviour, with an emphasis on sound, consistent modelling practices.
“It is very well structured, with lots of opportunity to use skills in this new platform”.
What you’ll learn
- The core concepts of MBSE and SysML, with an introduction to Cameo/CATIA Magic
- How to model a system’s context and states, and capture its requirements
- How to describe system behaviour using use cases and activity diagrams
- How to model logical and physical architectures, including interfaces
- The foundations of parametrics, simulation and sequence diagrams, plus an introduction to SysML v2.
Why take this course?
“The high amount of active participation made learning a new tool useful”.
Build practical skills in developing system architecture models and representing requirements. The course provides a foundation for more advanced MBSE learning while helping you establish consistent modelling habits.
Who is it suitable for?
Engineering practitioners, systems engineers and system architects seeking an introduction to applying MBSE with SysML. Basic systems engineering knowledge and awareness of MBSE tools and SysML are desirable.
Proposed delivery
Four days, in person in Adelaide or Canberra, with up to six participants.
SysML v2 Transition Training
About the course
Prepare for the transition from SysML v1 to SysML v2. Designed for systems engineers with experience developing SysML v1 models, this course introduces the language’s key concepts and modelling approaches through theory and practical application.
What you’ll learn
- The key concepts and language features of SysML v2, including differences from SysML v1.
- How to model structure and behaviour in SysML v2.
- How to represent identity, time and real systems, alongside quantities, constraints and calculations.
- How to model requirements and cases.
- Approaches for transitioning organisational and project modelling practices from SysML v1 to SysML v2.
Why take this course?
Develop familiarity with SysML v2 and gain practical experience applying it. Understand the changes that matter to your modelling work and explore considerations for transitioning your organisation or project.
Who is it suitable for?
Systems engineers and system architects who already develop SysML v1 models and want to build their SysML v2 capabilities. Participants should have completed MBSE Fundamentals or equivalent training or learning.
Proposed delivery
One and a half days, in person in Adelaide or Canberra, with up to six participants.
Decision Making using Digital Mission Engineering
About the course
Understand how digital mission engineering can inform capability decisions. This course introduces systems engineering, digital engineering and mission engineering, then explores how digital models can support decisions about capability effectiveness, integration, assurance and investment.
What you’ll learn
- The core concepts of systems engineering, digital engineering and mission engineering.
- How digital mission architectures and models support completeness and consistency.
- How to assess current capabilities and future options against identified missions.
- How mission engineering can inform force design, research priorities and portfolio decisions.
- How to use mission engineering insights to support integration planning and capability decisions at program and project level.
Why take this course?
Develop a clearer understanding of how systems engineering and mission engineering, supported by digital engineering can inform capability decisions. Explore the value of these methods in assessing options and supporting investment, integration and research prioritisation.
“The course contains very informative, high-level information to build understanding of Mission Engineering, Digital Engineering and MBSE”.
Who is it suitable for?
Managers, senior leaders and C-suite executives within Defence and Defence industry, who are seeking to understand the strategic value of systems engineering, digital engineering and mission engineering. The course is also relevant to professionals involved in Defence capability planning and investment decisions. No prior knowledge is required.
Proposed delivery
One day, in person in Adelaide or Canberra, with up to 12 participants.
“Some really great, concise definitions. Incredibly beneficial”.
