IAC 2014 in Adelaide

The 65th International Astronautical Congress (IAC) was held in Toronto from 23 Sept to 3 Oct 2014. The IAC is the largest international space industry and community event in the world, regularly attracting thousands of professionals in the space field.

This years Congress saw Adelaide selected as the host city for the 2017 IAC. Adelaide’s successful bid was a result of many years of hard work by the Space Industry Association of Australia (SIAA). Adelaide previously bid to host the 2014 IAC during the 2011 IAC in Cape Town and, while ultimately unsuccessful, provided a strong enough bid to be invited to reapply in future. The selection of IAC Host Cities is extremely competitive, with the Australian bid up against strong competition from Bremen, Istanbul and Orlando.

Aerospace Concepts assisted with the bid through a contribution to the sponsorship of the Australian booth in the exhibition. The booth acted as a very useful meeting point for conversations throughout the conference and for creating links with other Australian groups.

On the Monday of the conference, Andrea Boyd and Michael Brett presented the Adelaide bid to the members of the IAF. Thanks to the leadership of Daniel Porter, Brett Biddington and Michael Davis, the Adelaide bid was unanimously recommended as the host for IAC 2017 and this recommendation was confirmed by the IAF membership.

The impact of IAC on Adelaide will be widely felt, with around 3,000 delegates estimated to attend the conference.
