Systems Engineering for Autonomous Systems abstract accepted for the AI4SE & SE4AI Workshop 2024
We are proud to announce that Shoal Group Principal Systems Engineer and PhD candidate, Jawahar Bhalla (JB), has had an abstract accepted for presentation at the Systems Engineering Research Centre (SERC) AI4SE and SE4AI Workshop 2024.
The presentation is titled ‘A SE4AI Framework for the Systems Engineering of Autonomous Systems with a focus on the Curation of Data across the Lifecycle‘. It discusses the evolution of Systems Engineering developmental frameworks and methodologies, in light of the growth in AI-enabled autonomous systems incorporating Machine Learning (ML).
Systems Engineering has long been applied to technology-intensive projects in complex environments, but Artificial Intelligence (AI) enabled systems that incorporate Machine Learning (ML) add another level of complexity, as system behaviour builds on operational experience and is subject to ongoing evolution.
“Shoal Group have been leaders in the application of Systems Engineering philosophy and practice for over two decades,” says Shaun Wilson, Shoal Group CEO. “The tools and approaches we have designed and developed are evolving, as technology itself evolves. JB’s research has provided important findings, commentary, and approaches to continue this evolution, particularly considering the additional assurance challenges of autonomous systems.”
The very nature of AI-based systems is that they learn based on operational experience. This means that the traditional pre-definition of a clear and comprehensive set of requirements in a project is challenged. The breadth of behaviour possible from AI-intensive systems requires extensive verification, training and validation programs across many operational scenarios. It also requires a structured, systematic and systemic approach to project assurance to ensure reliability and safety.
The presentation will describe how the concepts from Systems Engineering, Modelling and Simulation and System Assurance can be integrated into a tailored, evolutionary Systems Engineering best-practice for AI-intensive autonomous systems that recognises the criticality of reference data for ML model design verification, model training, and model validation.
The presentation will be delivered as part of the SERC AI4SE 7 SE4AI Workshop at the George Mason University Arlington campus, Virginia, held on the 17 – 18 September 2024.
