A modular Digital Engineering approach to Mission Engineering

Our Head of Engineering, Matthew Wylie, presented at MBSE-CON – the Model-Based Systems Engineering Conference – on Friday the 3rd of May 2024. He presented ‘A modular Digital Engineering approach to Mission Engineering’, derived from Shoal’s approach to delivering improved systems engineering outcomes at reduced cost and risk.

Mission Engineering applies evidence-based systems engineering methods to ensure that the multiple systems that compose the mission capability can be effectively integrated and interoperable across the spectrum of: People, Processes, Tools and Technologies, Information, Governance, and Culture to achieve the mission purpose.

Shoal’s mission engineering capabilities are built on almost 20 years of experience in pioneering and applying model-based systems engineering and analysis to early-stage concept development in support of Defence’s major projects across land, sea, air and space. Our digital engineering solution uses proven tools and frameworks to capture and understand the operational context, capabilities, behaviours, information exchanges and operational performance to accomplish mission objectives, and inform evidence-based requirements definition and assessment of solution system options in support of acquisition.

Shoal presented a further evolution of our Mission Engineering capabilities, applying a modular digital engineering approach to deliver improved systems engineering outcomes at reduced cost and risk, for Defence applications as well as novel applications to address energy decarbonisation challenges.

Congratulations to Matthew and his co-authors, Dr Mark Unewisse, Prof Stephen Cook and Shaun Wilson.
